Sports Day

Sports Day! My favourite event of the year!
This year, school sports day was on the 19th June 2017. It started at 11.00 and, for my year group, lasted for over an hour. As usual, Mr Cowap organised it for all the students to take part and this year it took place on the MUGA.
During the wonderful day, there were lots of different activities, such as the egg and spoon race, sack race, javelin throw and three-legged race; I took part in the last two races and had an awesome time! Also, there were several running races with lengths such as 50m and 100m. There were opportunities to take part in other competitions, such as skipping, hurdles, long jump and long distance.

Long jump

Skipping race

50m race

Egg and Spoon race

We all had the chance to pick two of these races, which was great fun.
Sports Day is a great experience not only because you get to try out new sports but also because of the atmosphere. At Sports Day, there are always people there to cheer you on and support you and this helps you to know that you can do it. Adults and parents have an opportunity to come and watch you participate in your events and be part of your celebration. Each student is allowed to choose their own events so we all feel happier and more confident when taking part. Even if you don't succeed and win the event, you will still get a treat.
Without all the parents and teachers, our Sports Day wouldn't be a success! All the students of Springhill Catholic Primary School would like to say a massive THANK YOU to you all!

4DH Fishbourne Roman Palace Trip

4DH as well as other year 4 classes went on a trip to Fishbourne Roman Palace to learn about Roman lifestyle and artefacts!

During our trip, we explored the importance of archaeologists  as well as getting a taste of being a Roman slave. Ilia and Mehreen are understanding how to build a mosaic. This is one of the activities which are listed below.

We did mosaic building, Roman writing on two different resources, wool spinning, games from olden times and many more similar activities.

.

Two pupils were chosen to dress up as Prince and Princess to see the importance of  how the Romans dressed up in olden days and how they lived life as rulers.

THE MOSAIC:

This is one of the Roman artefacts that we saw during our adventure.  For example, mosaics like this are commonly laid on the floors of wealthy Romans' homes.

Harriet and Isobel tried to make their own mosaic using their initials and coloured cubes.

Electricity circuits

During this term, we've been learning about electricity. A few days ago, we got to learn about electricity in circuits and even got to make our own. Some people had done it before but some had not. However, it was still great fun for everyone. We had to arrange all the different components correctly together, using batteries, wires and crocodile clips. We had to make a light bulb light up, an alarm sound and make a motor come on. Lilla and Leo were able to make a really, really long circuit which meant they needed a lot of battery power. After that, we drew the circuits we made into our books.

Shane Long visit

A few weeks ago, Year 4, 5 & 6 had the once in a life time opportunity to meet Shane Long, the Irish international and Southampton FC football player. As you can imagine, it was amazing! We were able to meet him because Mr Kelly, who was running a Gaelic football club at the time, invited him in to our school to meet the the children. Shane Long came to help us with our Gaelic football skills and also talk a bit about football, he even got involved in our training drills. To add to this, Mr Kelly competed in a crossbar challenge with him. Guess who won? Mr Kelly! After that, Miss Andrews put Shane on the spot and asked whether he could do twenty keepy ups and as you would expect, he was able to do twenty and even threw in an amazing trick called around the world.

Myself and many others will remember that day as one of the most amazing moments of our lives.

Tri Golf Tournament

On Wednesday 20th April, we took part in a golf tournament at the Sports Centre in Southampton. We practised putting and chipping against five other schools.
Hitting the ball high was great fun and we all want to play again.

Developing our golfing skills.

The Art Gallery

On Tuesday 12th April, all 4PA went to Southampton Art Gallery. We worked on clay to make Roman shields.
All of us started with a brown, wet block of clay. After sketching our designs, we used a rolling pin and runners (little sticks that help to keep the clay thick) to make a big, round shape. It mostly looked like a pancake.
Using our design, we traced it onto our clay, then we used a knife to carve any pieces left outside the outline. It was difficult!
Next, we used a pencil to draw our design on the base, before we put air-drying clay on top. The purpose of the air-drying clay was to use a different colour and to be the final layer of the Roman shield. To shape the clay into lightning bolts and daggers was very hard. However, the parents were very helpful and helped shape the clay out. For the next step, we used Roman numerals to mark our birthday.
A bead was used to make a dot in between the one or two numbers of when we were born. We also put one on top of the boss (the metal centre). To add a bit more life, we gently pressed golden dust onto the shield with a paintbrush. That represented the shimmer on the shield to scare off the opponents.
Overall, people enjoyed the trip. Maybe because of time with family or to have had more fresh air or maybe even to have their own Roman shield completed.
It was fun!
